ANNUAL REPORT

These principles are
• valuing and promoting community development
• valuing and facilitating community organisations
• valuing and recognising cultural diversity
• valuing and respecting Māori as tangata whenua.
In 2013 approximately $6.9million of donations was
committed during the year to a wide range of sports,
recreation, social service, community development,
arts, cultural and environmental groups. Donations
were approved by the Trust Waikato board comprising
14 dedicated trustees from around the region with
extensive community sector and business experience.
Significant capital project donations were granted to
Home of Cycling Charitable Trust $500,000, Te Aroha
Events Centre Charitable Trust $120,000, Grandstand
Community Trust $120,000, and Te Kohao Health
$100,000. At the same time, the Trust continues to
make many small donations because it believes that
an active community and voluntary sector encourages
participation and inclusion in communities.
We have continued to support the umbrella trusts:
Sport Waikato $700,000, Community Waikato
$500,000 and Creative Waikato $430,000, all of which
contributed to building the capacity of the community
and voluntary sector in our region.
Three-year strategic funding partnerships have been
established with Volunteering Waikato, Otorohanga
District Development Board, English Language
Partners – Waikato and New Zealand Red Cross
Refugee Services. We know that communities
understand the needs of their people better than
anyone else does; our role is simply to work in unison
and offer some continuity of funding.
Donation processes have been further refined to
be responsive to community groups. In 2013, the
Trust completed its first year of offering donation
applications online. This opportunity was taken
up by approximately 46% of groups who applied
for a donation. The benefits of applying online are
many; our goal is to increase the number of online
applications over the coming year.
Every $1
Trust Waikato
donated in 2013
was split between
these sectors.
Donating effectively
Each year the Trust reviews its donation
areas of focus and is also guided by the
principles outlined in its Strategic Plan.
Trust Waikato categorises its donations using the New Zealand Standard Classification of Non-profit Organisations (NZSCNPO).
You can find out more about this classification system by visiting the Statistics New Zealand website
