TRUST WA I KATO
ANNUAL REPORT

Donating effectively
In over a quarter of a century, the Trust has donated
more than $139.4million to an array of projects and
community groups around the region. Approximately
$6.9million of donations was committed during the
year. Guided by the Trust’s Strategic Plan, donations
were aligned to our core principles of valuing and
promoting community development, valuing and
facilitating community organisations, valuing and
recognising cultural diversity, and valuing and
respecting Māori as tangata whenua.
The Trust has established strategic partnerships
with Volunteering Waikato, Otorohanga District
Development Board, English Language Partners
Waikato and New Zealand Red Cross Refugee
Services, to enable these community groups to make
a real difference where significant community needs
have been identified.
We have continued to support the umbrella trusts:
Sport Waikato, Community Waikato and Creative
Waikato, all of which contributed to building the
capacity of the community and voluntary sector in
our region.
Significant capital project donations were granted to
Home of Cycling Charitable Trust, Te Aroha Events
Centre Charitable Trust, Grandstand Community
Trust, and Te Kohao Health. The Trust also
contributed to a very wide range of sports, recreation,
social service, community development, arts, cultural
and environmental groups, in every part of its region.
During the year, Sport Waikato repaid in full the
Trust’s first community loan of $1.5million towards
the cost of building Brian Perry Sports House. Sports
House is a wonderful community asset and the
Trust is delighted to have been able to assist in the
financing of this project. Over the year, the Trust
also reviewed its community lending policy and has
committed to being active in this space.
The Trust continued to refine its donation processes
to be responsive to community groups and has now
completed its first full year of providing the ability to
apply for donations online. It was pleasing to note that
by the end of the year, approximately 46% of donation
applications were being received online.
Governing well
The Trust has continued its focus on effective
governance. Its board, comprising 14 trustees, is
appointed by the Associate Minister of Finance.
During the year, the appointment of trustee Pam Roa
ended after four years’ service, with Trevor Follows
appointed as a new trustee from 1 June 2013. Trustees
Lynnette Flowers, John Gillespie and Maxine Viggers
were reappointed by the Associate Minister of Finance
for a second four-year term. Trustee Ali Van der
Heyden held the role of chair from 1 April 2013 to
28 February 2014, with
trustee Niwa Nuri appointed
as acting chair from
1 March 2014.
The Trust is supported by
a dedicated staff team, who
help bring to fruition the
strategic goals of the Trust.
I gratefully acknowledge
the valued contributions
from the many groups and
volunteers within our region, each playing its part in
making our communities resilient and vibrant.
Significant progress
has been made
in the last year
in rebuilding the
reserves required to
maintain consistent
levels of donations.
