Volunteering Waikato:
Supporting, promoting
and encouraging volunteering
Volunteers are the heart and soul of our communities.
Whether young or old, they share one thing in
common – a desire to give back to our communities.
Supporting volunteering in the region is something
that Trust Waikato is passionate about. Entering into
a three-year strategic partnership with Volunteering
Waikato in 2011 has opened the doorway for further
developing volunteering throughout the region.
Volunteering Waikato has two key objectives – to
ensure community groups get the volunteers they
need, and to ensure that volunteers get the most out of
their decision to give their time, energy and passion.
Through the partnership, now in its third year,
Volunteering Waikato has employed a regional
co-ordinator to manage and promote its online
registration programme. The online registration
programme caters to organisations with vacancies,
as well as volunteers, with special emphasis placed
on growing and supporting volunteering beyond the
Hamilton area.
Volunteering Waikato’s general
manager Heather Moore says,
“Volunteering Waikato had always
struggled to provide a service
to such a geographically large
region. With the combination
of changing technology and the
support of Trust Waikato we have
been successful in achieving
a truly regional service. When
we entered this partnership we
were supporting 15 organisations
outside of Hamilton; this
has now increased to 130.
We are very happy with the progress, but we still have
a lot more work to do in this area.”
Volunteering Waikato’s staff work with representatives
from each member organisation to help ensure that
there are robust processes in place to recruit the right
volunteers, train and support them well, and to keep
them engaged as long as possible.
The majority of community organisations are heavily
reliant on voluntary effort. Ensuring that volunteer
programmes are strong, helps to ensure a successful
relationship between the volunteer and the group they
choose to volunteer for.
Volunteering Waikato works with more than 2,500
volunteers each year. Volunteers are able to search
for vacancies online from the comfort of their own
homes. The benefits of participating as a volunteer are
many, such as developing existing skills and learning
new ones, gaining work experience, and making a
valuable contribution in their communities.
