The Battle of O-Rākau, from 31 March to 2 April 1864, signalled the
end of the Colonial Land Wars in the Waikato, which had raged since
Governor Grey invaded the Waikato in July 1863. O-Rākau, close to the
Pūniu River east of Kihikihi, was the site of heavy Māori casualties, as
warriors from Ngāti Maniapoto, Tūhoe and Ngāti Raukawa sought to
block the British troops southward advance.
