This plan:
• Holds the total rates rise at 3.8% to existng
ratepayers each year for the next 10 years. This
provides certainty for ratepayers, is substantally
lower than most years in the past decade and
the forecasted rates rises of the last 10-Year Plan.
• Keeps debt at about $440 million for 10 years.
Previously debt levels were planned to reach
more than $700 million.
• Reduces what it costs to run the city by
$15 million over the next three years by cutng
some services and increasing some user charges.
Hamilton really is a great place to live and work.
We are a signifcant city in New Zealand. This 10-
Year Plan is a new directon for Hamilton and is very
diferent to its predecessor. It is a fnancial makeover
to ensure we contnue to provide for our fast-
growing city in a fnancially sustainable way.
To address these fnancial issues, we have made cuts
to spending and increases to revenue. The focus has
been on the frst three years and the full details are
in this plan.
To get to this positon we have gone through a
comprehensive and thorough exercise scrutnising
every area of council spending, and made decisions
about where cost savings can be made and what the
priorites are. Some tough decisions have been taken
and some of those won’t please everyone.
We have tried to focus spending cuts on areas with
minimum possible impact on our community. We
are commited to delivering all of the essental
services to the city, but the Council organisaton
will become leaner and more efcient.
This plan stll provides for development and some
excitng projects to meet the needs of our growing
city. There will be new roads and we’re also
enhancing some of the city’s key assets that make
Hamilton such a great place to live. The much-loved
Hamilton Gardens will be expanded and improved,
we’re contnuing to fund the creatve sector and
Seddon Park facilites are being upgraded.
To increase revenue we are increasing user pays
charges in some areas and there are some new fees.
