Over
the past three years the Trust has been operating on a reduced
donations budget. This decision was due to the significant reduction in
the Trust’s capital fund, as a result of the global financial crisis in 2008.
At that time the Trust also reviewed its donation focus and chose to
prioritise donations which support children and families and those
communities with the highest needs. This remains a focus of the Trust.
For 2011 the donations budget was set at $7.19million. There were three donation rounds
closing in February, June and September. Throughout the year the Trust granted a total of
$7.08million in donations to over 750 community groups and projects across the region.
Donations were approved by the Trust Waikato board comprising 14 dedicated trustees
from around the region with extensive community sector and business experience.
The Trust introduced multi-year donations in 2010 and approved 64 applications. Multi-year
donations are granted for 2 or 3 years to those groups whose work aligns closely to the
Trust’s areas of focus. Of the 17 new multi-year donations approved in 2011, the largest
sector represented was social service organisations. For more information about multi-year

Donating
In 2011 donations reached the Trust’s donation areas of focus. The largest donations
went to supporting families and young people, followed by building resilient communities.
A significant donation of $500,000 was paid to the South Waikato District Council for the
South Waikato Sport and Events Centre. Other significant capital works donations include
Hamilton Christian Nightshelter Trust $150,000 and Te Whakaruruhau Refuge $100,000
(plus $45,000 operating donation). Substantial donations were made to three umbrella
trusts: Sport Waikato $680,000, Community Waikato $500,000 and Arts Waikato $300,000.
